Uttar Pradesh (UP) is witnessing unprecedented growth in its agricultural sector, marking a turning point for farmers and the economy. Thanks to strategic government initiatives, the state has not only elevated crop productivity but also significantly enhanced farmer incomes. In the fiscal year 2024-25, UP reported a remarkable wheat production of 414.39 lakh metric tons, making it India’s largest wheat producer, accounting for 35.3% of the national output. Rice production also saw impressive growth, reaching 219.2 lakh metric tons, enabling UP to secure the second position nationally and contribute 14.7% to rice production.

The productivity growth in essential crops like wheat and rice has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over the last eight years, wheat productivity surged by 42.8%, up from an average of 8.7% (2001-2016). Likewise, rice productivity soared by 47.7%, compared to the 14.8% observed in the preceding period. This dramatic increase in UP’s share of national production—from 12.5% to 30.5% for wheat, and from 14.7% to 35.3% for rice—underscores the positive impact of progressive agricultural policies.

Aside from staple crops, UP has strengthened its position in oilseeds and pulses as well. With a rise to 2.92 lakh metric tons of oilseeds in 2024-25, contributing 6.9% to India’s total, and pulses production reaching 3.56 lakh metric tons, the state has doubled its share in pulses from 0.6% to 1.4%. Additionally, sugarcane production continues to dominate, securing a 54.5% national share and significantly contributing to sugar and ethanol production, vastly improving farmer livelihoods.

Uttar Pradesh’s livestock and dairy farming sectors have also seen rapid advancements. The total milk production reached 414 lakh metric tons, accounting for 20% of the national output. Initiatives such as the “Rashtriya Gokul Mission” have improved cattle breeds, resulting in better yields. Projections indicate that inland fish production will increase to 13.30 lakh metric tons, placing UP among the leaders in fish production as well.

The state’s government is committed to farmer welfare through various initiatives, transferring over Rs 80,000 crore to 2.86 crore farmers. Investments in irrigation, digital tools, and women empowerment are improving farmers’ quality of life, thus fostering a robust, all-encompassing agricultural environment.

Short Summary

Uttar Pradesh’s agricultural sector showcases record production in wheat, rice, and dairy, supported by strategic policies and financial aid for farmers. This comprehensive growth model not only uplifts farmer incomes but also sets a benchmark for sustainable agricultural development in India.
