Main Article:

In a significant move to protect the Aravalli hills, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has declared that no new mining leases will be granted until the management plan for sustainable mining (MPSM) is finalized. This decision is pivotal, considering that only 0.19% of the vast 1.44 lakh square kilometers of the Aravalli region is eligible for mining activities. The latest announcement aims to mitigate the environmental impact while striking a balance between development and conservation.

The Supreme Court’s recent endorsement of specific definitions for the Aravalli hills further reinforces the commitment to sustainable mining. The court deemed that all landforms within 100 meters should be excluded from any mining lease considerations. This threshold follows internationally accepted scientific standards and aims to preserve the ecological integrity of the region. According to Yadav, existing mines must adhere to stringent regulations set forth by the central committee, which is tasked with overseeing mining activities in the area.

Cultivation remains the predominant land use in the Aravalli region, accounting for approximately 55% of the landscape across 37 districts, including parts of Udaipur, Ajmer, and South Delhi. Critics of the recent mining policies assert that misinformation is causing confusion, particularly around allegations that 90% of the Aravalli landscape is open for mining. Yadav refuted these claims, highlighting the need for clear, fact-based communication regarding mining regulations and environmental safeguards.

As the MPSM is developed, it will follow the successful framework established for the Saranda forests in Jharkhand, emphasizing sustainable practices in mining and land management. Despite the opposition’s claims of rampant illegal mining during their tenure, the current administration is focused on enhanced oversight and a scientifically validated approach to regulation. The commitment to preserving the Aravalli hills aligns with broader national goals of environmental sustainability and responsible resource exploitation.

This decisive action taken by the Indian government underscores the importance of protecting natural resources while fostering an equitable balance between development needs and ecological conservation.

Short Summary:

The Indian government’s halt on new mining leases in the Aravalli hills signifies a strong commitment to sustainable mining practices. By adhering to scientific standards and prioritizing environmental safeguards, authorities aim to protect this vital landscape for future generations.
