The national capital, New Delhi, leads the race with 4,882 drones, followed closely by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, with 4,588 and 4,132 drones respectively. This surge in drone registrations signifies a growing acceptance and regulatory support for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) across various sectors, including agriculture, logistics, and surveillance.
The DGCA’s data indicates that a wide variety of drones are being utilized for diverse applications. Out of the 96 Type Certificates issued to different UAS models, a remarkable 65 are dedicated to agricultural use, enhancing operational efficiencies in farming. The shift towards simplifying the registration process, where documents such as voter ID and driving licenses can now replace the need for a passport, has further encouraged the proliferation of drones. To ensure efficient airspace management, the ministry has established a drone airspace map divided into three distinct zones—green, yellow, and red. This system of categorization streamlines drone operations; for instance, no prior permission is needed to operate in the green zone, while operations in the yellow zone require approval from Air Traffic Control (ATC). The red zone poses strict regulations, necessitating prior permission from the central government. Additionally, Remote Pilot Training Organisations (RPTOs) have issued over 22,466 Remote Pilot Certificates (RPCs), underscoring a rapidly growing demand for skilled drone operators.
