Spearheaded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and in collaboration with Joby Aviation, this ambitious initiative aims to create the world’s first comprehensive urban aerial taxi network. The RTA has identified four key vertiport locations where residents and tourists will be able to board these aerial taxis: Dubai International Airport (DXB), Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. These sites were strategically chosen to connect major transportation hubs, tourist attractions, and densely populated areas, ensuring quick and convenient travel across the city.
The RTA recently marked a significant milestone with the successful completion of the UAE’s first crewed electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) flight. This landmark test flight covered a distance between the Dubai Jetman Helipad and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) in just 17 minutes, showcasing the time efficiency and reliability of this urban aerial transport. The initial vertiport network, designed specifically for eVTOL operations, will facilitate rapid point-to-point travel—transforming how citizens and visitors navigate Dubai.
At the center of this innovative transport service is the Joby S4 air taxi, engineered for speed and sustainability. With a capacity to carry a pilot and four passengers, this electric aircraft can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h with a range of 160 km on a single charge. As a result, a journey that currently takes approximately 45 minutes by car from DXB to Palm Jumeirah could be reduced to a mere 10 to 12 minutes by air. This substantial time savings will alleviate road congestion, offering a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient travel experience.
Furthermore, the development of these vertiports is aligned with Dubai’s broader vision of smart and resilient transport systems. By incorporating facilities for charging and multimodal travel—linking with metros and bus services—the aerial taxi network aims to enhance overall mobility within the emirate.
