Singh took the controversy a step further by controversially interpreting religious texts to suggest that certain scriptures permit rape as a means to attain spiritual benefits. Without specifying any particular faith, he argued that guidelines within these texts promoted having sexual relations with Dalit or tribal women as a substitute for pilgrimage, fundamentally trivializing the grave issue of sexual violence. “It is written that having intercourse with a person of this caste will give the spiritual reward of this pilgrimage,” he stated. In an appalling twist, he implied that these scriptures were partly responsible for the prevalence of sexual violence against marginalized women.
